If these walls could talk, they couldn’t tell you everyone who’s partied here — but they’d tell you how this place came to be. The first incarnation of this two-story limestone structure was a 19th-century watering hole, opening in 1882 as the city built its new Capitol a few blocks away. It ran as the Shamrock Saloon, with a bawdy house upstairs, then spent a century as restaurants and storefronts before the City condemned it in the 1960s for “nefarious activities within its portals.” It sat empty and falling in.
Then in 1968, architect David Graeber bought the shell and spent nine months turning it into his home. He sandblasted a century of paint off the brick, kept the tin cornice made in Cincinnati in 1882, and built a strikingly modern interior behind the original stone. The National Register of Historic Places says his restoration “was the first such activity in the district and began the trend toward renovation of the area.” In plain English: this house is why 6th Street came back. The Heritage Society put it on a public tour in 1969. In 1983, Graeber had a helicopter lower two 1,500-pound steel arches onto the roof to build the glass atrium over the pool.
Much of what you’ll walk through is exactly as he made it. It’s a time capsule of 144 years in one location — and it’s still hosting revelers.
